What happens to changes if the connection between the Server Manager and Agent is interrupted?

Question:

What happens if there are network problems between the Server Manager and Server Agent while a change is trying to be made via NetDirector? What happens if the link goes down, and you make changes manually?

Answer:

This is really a 2-part question. In the first part, a change is being created in NetDirector, and during the application step, there is network trouble between the Server Manager (SM) and the Server Agent (SA), such that the SM cannot communicate with the SA. In this case, the SM will give a "Connection Refused" error and will return to the application window. You can then try to reapply the change when the connection problem is fixed.

It is also possible that the connection fails in the middle of the change - say, after the files have been updated and the service has been stopped, but before the service restart has been received. In this case, when the service may come back up but notification is not received by the Server Manager, you will get a "Lock" icon on the server for that particular service. The Server Manager will think that the service is down, even though it is not. To fix this lock, you will need to remove the Server for the Server Manager (via the Manage Servers adiministration screen) and then add it back again.

The second problem would occur when the connection between the Server Manager and Server Agent is lost, and changes are made to the Server Agent directly via editing of the configuration files. Since changes are the SA has already checked and seen that the files have changed, but could not send notification via the SM because the link was broken. In this case, you can do two things. First, you could remove and re-add the server to ensure that all of the files are re-initialized properly. Second, you choose to retain the SA record from SM, upon updating/applying a change, the SM will check if the version in SM is in sync/equal with the SA. If not in sync, user can overwrite the version on the SA.
